We're excited to announce an upcoming chapter book series that brings to life the true, inspiring stories of African American children who escaped slavery during the American Civil War era. These courageous young people risked everything for a chance at freedom—and their stories are finally being told in a way middle school readers can understand, relate to, and never forget.
Each book in the series follows a different child, aged 10 to 16, who fled southern slavery and journeyed north through danger, determination, and hope. These gripping adventures are based on real historical accounts—some escaped alone, others with family or the help of brave conductors on the Underground Railroad. All faced unthinkable risks. All showed unshakable courage.
